EstLab – Electrical Science and Technology Laboratory

Attività del Laboratorio

L’EstLab (dall’inglese Electrical Science and Technology Laboratory) è il laboratorio del gruppo di Elettrotecnica del Dipartimento di Ingegneria.

Nell’EstLab sono ospitate tutte le attività di ricerca e di didattica connesse con i corsi di base di “Fondamenti di Elettrotecnica” e “Circuiti” della laurea in Ingegneria Elettronica “Elettrotecnica ed Elettronica” della laurea in Informatica, nonché con i corsi più avanzati della laurea magistrale in Ingegneria Elettronica dell’Industria e dell’Innovazione.

Le attività svolte in laboratorio riguardano gli aspetti della produzione e gestione dell’energia da fonti rinnovabili (fotovoltaico, eolico, ecc.), lo sviluppo di sensori e sistemi smart per a domotica e gli smart building con schede a microcontrollore o FPGA, e la modellistica dei sistemi elettrici ed elettromagnetici (grazie all’esperienza nello sviluppo di simulatori elettromagnetici ad elementi finiti).

Le attività non si limitano però a quelle di un laboratorio di elettrotecnica o elettronica, in quanto tra le tematiche affrontate troviamo l’applicazione dell’intelligenza artificiale ai più svariati campi dell’innovazione tecnologica. Ad esempio, proprio all’interno dell’EstLab è nata la prima intelligenza artificiale (AI – Artificial Intelligence) musicale capace di duettare con un musicista, apprendendone in tempo reale lo stile ed il mood della performance. Tale AI viene attualmente utilizzata durante delle performance esclusive in musei e festival dal musicista elettronico Alex Braga, e da diversi altri importanti musicisti che si alternano al pianoforte (Link identifier #identifier__60511-2https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0wUVsJL6ts).

Inoltre all’interno dell’EstLab è temporaneamente ospitato il Laboratorio Interdipartimentale di Tecnologie Musicali ed Acustica, dove gli studenti di Ingegneria interagiscono con quelli del DAMS (Dipartimento di Filosofia, Comunicazione e Spettacolo) durante lo studio e la sperimentazione dei software musicali, delle applicazioni e dei prodotti per il mercato musicale, della progettazione acustica delle sale e degli strumenti musicali.

L’ambiente dell’EstLab è di conseguenza vivace ed innovativo e chi ci lavora tiene sempre presente che la creatività è la migliore compagna dell’avanzamento tecnologico.

EstLab (i.e. Electrical Science and Technology Laboratory) is the laboratory of the Electrical Engineering group of the Engineering Department. EstLab hosts all the research and teaching activities related to the basic classes of “Fundamentals of Electrical Science” and “Circuits”, belonging to the bachelor degree in Electronic Engineering, and “Electrical Engineering and Electronics” of the bachelor degree in Computer Science, as well as  the most advanced classes of the master’s degree in Electronic Engineering for Industry and Innovation. The activities carried out in the laboratory concern the aspects of production and management of energy from renewable sources (photovoltaic, wind, etc.), the development of sensors and smart systems for home automation and smart buildings with microcontrollers or FPGAs, and the modeling of electrical and electromagnetic systems (with large experience in developing electromagnetic systems simulators based on Finite Element Method).

Still, the activities are not limited to those of a laboratory of Electrical Engineering or Electronics, because among the issues addressed we find the application of Artificial Intelligence to several different fields of technological innovation. As a notable example, EstLab researchers developed the first Artificial Intelligence (AI) able to duet with a musician, learning in real time the style and mood of the performance. This AI is currently used during exclusive performances in museums and festivals by the electronic musician Alex Braga, and by several other important musicians who alternate at the piano (Link identifier #identifier__72664-4https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0wUVsJL6ts).

Furthermore, EstLab currently hosts the Interdepartmental Laboratory of Music and Acoustic Technologies, where the Engineering and DAMS (Department of Philosophy, Communication and Entertainment) students interacts during the study and experimentation of music software, applications and products for the music market, acoustic design of rooms and musical instruments.

The environment of EstLab is consequently lively and innovative and those who work there keep in mind that creativity is the best companion of technological advancement.
